Museum was founded in 1884 on an impulse of an association which was dealing in collection of historical objects. It is orientated on history, art history and ethnography of Spišský region. In 1989 museum took over the administration of Spišský castle. It is a part of the Slovak National Museum. Besides Spiš castle it represents their expositions and exhibitions in Historical town hall, in House of Master Paul from Levoča and in renaissance house on Majster Pavol´s square (Creative culture in Spiš).
