Spišská Sobota fulfils its role of a historical tourist center. The most important monument is the St. George Church, built in the 13th century with a Gothic interior and the altar from the workshop of Master Pavol of Levoča. Most of the bourgeois houses date back to the 16th and 17th century. Many of them now provide catering and hotel services, some of them serve as the cultural and public institutions (libraries, archives, monuments office). Spišská Sobota is a real gem among the architectural and artistic monuments of the Spiš region. Of all the Spiš towns, this municipality of Poprad has preserved its unique and unrepeatable character to this day. History of Spišská Sobota is almost identical with Poprad (1256). The entire urban area was in 1950 declared an urban conservation area.
