The Poloniny National Park is the easternmost Slovak national park. It lies in the Slovak, Polish and Ukrainian border area. It is situated in the Prešov region and occupies a significant part of the Snina district. There are 10 villages with about 2,000 inhabitants in the protection zone of the national park. In connection with the construction of Starina reservoir – Slovak largest water reservoir for drinking water – seven villages were displaced what greatly affected the life and the settlement structure of this region. A substantial part of the most protected areas of the national park is given to the nature reserves for protection of the old forest communities.
