The Eastern Slovakia Renaissance, Gothic in Spiš region, castles, chateaus and typical wooden churches include to the world cultural heritage.

Historical towns

More than a fourth part of cultural monuments in Slovakia is situated on the territory of Prešov county. Kežmarok town is situated in the picturesque environment of Spiš under the High Tatras. More than seven centuries of its existence have been reflected also in the architecture, which contains the Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque styles. A uniqueness of this town is the square, which is designed to have the Y-shape and with town-hall amidst it, and which is ended by the town chateau. Kežmarok castle is a residence of the Museum focused on the social sciences. In the surroundings of Kežmarok, you can also find here the Ľubovňa castle and urban conservation area called as Podolínec.  

The devotees of history will be certainly attracted by the medieval town Levoča, which is the most important town of Spiš ethnic group. For its historical monuments it also belongs to the most important towns in Slovakia. The second biggest church in Slovakia – Saint Jacob Cathedral is situated here. Its main altar with the height of 18.6 m and width of 6 m is the highest wooden late-Gothic altar in the world. This work of art made by Master Paul from Levoča is the national cultural monument.  

A dominant of this region is Spiš Castle, which up to the present day surprises by its monumental architecture. This most extensive castle complex in the central Europe is the national cultural monument and since the year 1993 is listed in the List of World Cultural and Nature Heritage UNESCO. There is a clerical town Spišská Kapitula situated opposite this castle on the hill, characterized by its Cathedral with two Romanesque towers.  

In the South-Eastern part of a valley called as Popradská kotlina, there is Poprad town situated, which is an administrative, economic and cultural centre of the region placed under the Tatras. There is the early-Gothic Church of Saint Egidius situated here, near to which is the Renaissance Bell Tower from the year 1658 situated. The ward of Poprad town called as Spišská Sobota was declared to be the urban conservation area.

Nature

The environment with many forests, water areas and numerous historical monuments is used as a place for recreation, active and passive relaxation. There are a number of protected areas situated here in the varied nature of Prešov county which attract the domestic and foreign tourists.  

There are also three national parks situated here – National Park High Tatras, Pieninský National Park and National Park Slovenský raj.  

The High Tatras is a region, which is, thanks to the most beautiful Slovak mountains, the most attractive touristic destination with offer of the nature. Thanks to its captivating beauty, the High Tatras are sought after by domestic and foreign tourists and they became also a symbol of Slovakia. Every year the High Tatras attracts thousands of tourists, mountaineers and skiers due to its beauties, high peaks and magnificent lakes. A clear air of Tatras serves also for a treatment of respiration diseases. Besides the splendid nature, an attraction for tourists is the cogway railroad, called also as “zubačka” by domestic people. The High Tatras fascinated many mountaineers and ski-alpinists. For those who desire to admire this splendid country from the height, but for lack of courage and experience they are not able to climb up it, the suspended funicular railway is built here directly to the peak called as Lomnický štít. In addition to the marvellous view, you can also experience here the night in the highest placed hotel in Europe. The High Tatras will enchant you and your visit here will not be certainly the last one. 

The first International Natural Park in Europe was declared in the year 1932 on the territory of Pieniny. Pieniny are a part of the klippe belt situated at boundary of the inner and outer Carpathians. They have a complicated geological structure forming an interesting relief of rocky walls, small towers and detached masses of various shapes. From the view of tourism, an interesting attraction is the canalization of the breakthrough Dunajec river by rafts. The Museum Červený kláštor and health resort settlement Červený kláštor – spa are situated near to the National Park.  

Slovenský raj is considered to be one of the most beautiful regions in Slovakia. This mountain range in the Spiš region is characterized by the rugged terrain. There can be many canyons, gulches, gorges, and waterfalls and caves, as well, situated there. The most known and beautiful is Dobšinská Ice Cave, a decoration of which is solely formed by ice. As for its decoration, this cave belongs to the richest decorated caves in the world.  

Wellness and spa

The important curative places include the Eastern Slovakia spa resorts. The climatic health resorts based on the thermal water in Bardejov are known in all Europe. Besides sanatoriums offering also the wellness services, there can be many historical monuments found reaching back to the Middle Age. In the surroundings of Bardejov the splendid wooden churches are situated here, two of which are directly in the open-air museum in the spa Bardejovské Kúpele.

There are also more than 12 kilometres of the finished skiing courses at your disposal, which are artificially snowing by the technical snow.  The popular attraction includes also the night skiing, paragliding and free-riding on snowboard. Cycling

To get to know the beauties of the Northeastern Slovakia, you can also realize it by means of a bike. The most beautiful cycling routes in the High Tatras include the route to Hrebienok, the popular point of departure for tourists towards the Veľká and Malá studená dolina. This cyclic route has got a short, but demanding rise. More fit tourists will welcome the longer route to Hrebienok through Zelené pleso, or 97 km long Tatras cycling route passing through many beautiful towns of this region.
