Prešov and surroundings

Prešov is still undiscovered gem among the Slovak royal towns. We can find here one of the most important industrial monuments in Slovakia – national cultural monument of Solivar, the Gothic Cathedral of St. Nicholas, baroque Calvary, the Jewish Synagogue, the St. John the Baptist Greek Catholic church with a rare replica of the Shroud of Turin, the Museum of Wines and many other attractions. There are the ruins of five castles in the surroundings of Prešov and famous Dubnica opal mines where the largest opal in the world has been found – it is called Harlequin for its beautiful colour. Prešov is the only Slovak city that can be proud of having the 49th parallel running through its historic center. Another interesting fact about Prešov is that there can be found 325 immovable cultural monuments. The historic center has been since 1950 one of the oldest urban conservation areas in Slovakia.
