Grandiose historical Devín castle stands on a strategically massive rock above the junction of the rivers Danube and Morava and it is a part of Bratislava city today. Devín castle is one of the oldest Slovak castles, its written records date back to the year 864. The oldest history of Slovaks and Slovakia was written „on“ the castle. But its area was inhabited long before that – archeological research uncovered findings already from the Stone age. Also monuments, from the Eneolithic period were preserved here. Devín castle was an important junction of roads, which was used as an army base by Romans in the 2nd century. After the downfall of a Great Moravian empire the owners of the castle changed frequently, and in the 18th century Devín castle began to deteriorate and gradually only ruins remained. Today, Devín castle is such a beautiful, obsolete and reconstructed monument with expositions from the past of Slavs and a unique castle well with the depth of 55 metres. Just to make the trip a bit more unique, then take a journey to the castle by boat from Bratislava or from a nearby Austrian Hainburg, with non-traditional refreshments in cozy fish restaurants situated in the small streets of the castle’s village Devín.
