Central-Slovakian Museum (Stredoslovenské múzeum) was founded in 1889, and today it is the oldest cultural institution in the city. In 2009 the museum received the most prestigious award in the field – The Museum of the year 2009 (Múzeum roka 2009). Presently, it accommodates 3 permanent expositions, where a number of cultural, educational, and professional events take place.
In Matthias' House (Matejov dom) a new interactive exposition was opened in 2009. It was dedicated to the history of Banská Bystrica, and it is currently regarded as one of the most modern ones in Slovakia. The exposition contains the majority of the most precious collection objects of the museum. The exposition is accompanied by the music of the authors from Banská Bystrica; it includes an audiovisual presentation, and there are also info-booths with a lot of information concerning topics, which are dealt with in particular rooms.
Thurzo's House (Thurzov dom) is one of the the most valuable buildings of the SNP square (Námestie SNP), and it accommodates a regional exposition, which is mainly focused on the history of the central Slovakian region and mining. Throughout the year, number of cultural, educational, and social events takes place in Thurso's House, all of which enjoy great popularity among the visitors.
The Tihanyi Castle (Tihányiovský kaštieľ) in Radvaň accommodates a natural science exposition called „The Nature of Central Slovakia“ (“Príroda stredného Slovenska”), which provides a holistic picture of the natural conditions of central Slovakia. It is divided into 8 sections, which present the land of this region; in one particular room animal sounds can be heard, which the visitors can turn on themselves by selecting them on the panel. Throughout the whole year, a number of related events take place herein such as animating programs and creative workshops. Very popular is a series called „Travelers' Tuesdays“ („Cestovateľské utorky“), which offers remarkable views on nature, both Slovak and worldwide, through the eyes of travelers.
