Bardejov is known as the most gothic town in Slovakia. The first written mention of it comes from the 13th century but it experienced its golden age in the 15th century. Historic square with its 46 burgess houses which preserved their medieval character is a dominant feature of the town. There is a renaissance town hall from 1511 in the middle of the square. The Roman Catholic Gothic Basilica Minor of St. Egidius which contains 11 original gothic wing altars is very unique in Europe. Close to the town center there is an urban rarity of the eastern Slovakia - the only partially preserved set of the former Jewish baths and a synagogue which were built on schedule and according to talmudistic regulations. Fortification is the best preserved defense system in Slovakia- Except for the walls also the gate and ten bastions have been preserved. Bardejov Town Conservation Reserve along with unique Jewish suburbs are registered among the UNESCO World Heritage Sites since 2000.
